Welcome to “In Praise of Thought.*”
*Yes, we all need another Substack. We need it.
The name is derived from the collection of poems I published a few years ago with the same title—not because I can’t think of new and interesting titles, but because this one seems to encapsulate the Substack so perfectly.
The writing you will find here is the natural evolution of work I’ve been publishing in the Journal section of my website. You can expect essays on writing, mostly—my web series “In Praise of a Line,” for example, will continue—but also writings on the intersection of philosophy, technology, and culture, as I’ve long been concerned with. I hope to highlight outstanding journalism, books, poems, music, and film. On occasion, I might even publish one of my own poems, too.
Why am I starting a Substack? Writers read differently; we pick apart sentence structure and sometimes get caught up in language over story. Even though it often becomes a form of study, I think most writers would still claim reading as one of their greatest joys. If nothing else, reading is necessary for a writer’s survival. So I began to seriously write about what I read—in both form and substance—and to think about how a body of work (or even a piece of it) is most interesting when placed in greater context, and vice versa. Therefore, I might write about technology via Kurt Vonnegut, or Palestine via Isabella Hammad.
The Substack will be monetized for certain subscriptions only. Namely, paid subscribers will be given the privilege to comment, to engage further. But for now, I’ve decided that the bulk of my writing will be available to non-paying subscribers as well.
I’m hoping to publish one to two essays a week, on Thursdays. I have no desire to be a content factory, so the pacing is subject to evolve! I want to make sure I am producing quality writing while honoring your subscriptions and most importantly, your precious time.
I am forever honored when anyone reads my work! I’m so excited to share my writing with you.
The first series of essays will drop tomorrow.
Subscribe if you wish!
